Role of Social media in Indian Politics
Main Article Content
Abstract
The role of social media in Indian politics has become extremely important. This medium not only establishes a direct dialogue between the public and politicians, but also plays a major role in election campaigning and public opinion formation. Earlier political images were created through public relations and ground work, but today the image of leaders is shaped using professional technology through social media. The vast influence of more than 90 crore smartphone users in India and social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, etc. has turned political parties towards online campaigning. Social media played a decisive role in the 2014 and 2019 elections, where Narendra Modi and other leaders used it to reach out directly to youth and women. However, along with its positive effects, challenges like spreading fake news, hatred and rumors have also emerged. The special impact of social media has been seen in the politics of Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP successfully used it in the 2017 assembly elections. Social media has made politics more transparent and full of public participation, but the need for rules is also being felt to prevent its misuse. In the times to come, this medium will influence Indian democracy and politics even more.
