Marathi Literature and AI: Tradition, Transformation, and Future

Abstract

Marathi literature possesses a long and rich tradition, spanning from saint literature to modern novels, poetry, drama, and essays. This tradition is now being joined by a new element: Artificial Intelligence (AI). This change is not merely technological but touches the very nature of creativity. AI refers to providing computer systems with capabilities akin to human thought, enabling tasks such as language understanding, writing, analysis, translation, and analysis of style, meter, and content with machine assistance. This can bring certain advantages to Marathi literature. For example, it will become possible to assist with plot construction, dialogue, suggesting vocabulary, proofreading, correcting grammar and style, as well as translating Marathi literature to reach a global readership. In the field of research, the digitization and analysis of ancient texts and manuscripts can become significantly easier. However, alongside these benefits, the use of AI may also pose some challenges and questions. For instance, AI-generated text and an author's own creativity may come into conflict. Furthermore, the dialect, cultural context, emotional depth, and linguistic nuances within a literary work could be lost. Certain questions regarding copyright may also arise. Many scholars argue that using AI as a co-writer or a tool is more appropriate. This is because ideas, experiences, and emotions are inherently human; AI can help give them form by providing references from elsewhere.

In the future, Marathi language and literature education in schools and colleges could become AI-based. Similarly, AI can be used to preserve and study rural-urban dialects. Therefore, scholars believe that AI is not a force that will replace Marathi literature, but rather a tool that will add new dimensions to it. There is a strong belief that if AI is used wisely and creatively, while respecting tradition, the future of Marathi literature can become even more prosperous
