Abstract

Environmental degradation resulting from pollution, deforestation, poor waste management, oil spillage, and climate change has become a major challenge in Nigeria. This paper examined the influence of environmental education on community awareness in Nigeria. The study discussed the concepts of environmental education and community awareness, as well as methods of promoting environmental education through school curricula, media campaigns, community sensitization programmes, adult education, religious organizations, and non-governmental organizations. The paper revealed that environmental education significantly improves environmental knowledge, promotes positive behavioural change, encourages community participation in conservation activities, and supports sustainable resource management. However, challenges such as poor funding, inadequate instructional materials, low literacy levels, and weak policy implementation hinder effective environmental education in Nigeria. The paper concluded that environmental education is essential for promoting environmental consciousness and sustainable development in Nigeria. It recommended stronger government support, improved environmental literacy programmes, and increased stakeholder collaboration in environmental awareness campaigns.
