Algorithms and Aesthetics: Reimagining Kalidasa and Spenser through Human-Machine Interaction

Abstract

This paper charts a landscape of transformation in the field of literature and language studies as they confront the advancements of Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the digital age. This paper, through discussions and examination of the field of digital humanities, and an exploration of machine-assisted literary analysis, will outline how modern computational techniques have fundamentally altered interpretation and reception in the contemporary context with regard to works of Kalidasa and Edmund Spenser. From a broad perspective, this work considers the ways in which the works of the classical and Renaissance poets are archived, interpreted, and distributed across global boundaries using AI-based tools of Natural Language Processing (NLP), machine translation, digital archiving, and text-mining technology. This paper suggests that technology contributes to a new kind of comparative literature that can, among other things, reveal stylistic, themic, and symbolic patterns across different cultures and periods. At the same time, this paper acknowledges the power of machine interpretation and offers a critique of how algorithms are unable to truly account for the depths of sentiment, mythic imagery, philosophical implications, and aesthetic complexity present in the poetry of Kalidasa and Spenser. The paper will explore how human creativity clashes and combines with computation: can literary imagination ever be fully realized through artificial intelligence, or is it simply an array of language patterns? I will then explore how literary criticism, digital humanities, and AI studies can expand the dimensions of literary scholarship while retaining the human interpreter as the ultimate authority over interpretation. The conclusion of this work will highlight the promise of technological innovation for old texts, while acknowledging the enduring importance of human imagination.
