Abstract
Descriptions of sea voyages are also found in Jataka stories and Buddhist stories. Due to trade, traders from one country used to travel to another country. To exchange their ideas and buy and sell goods, they (traders) had to learn the dialect of that country. The Harappans were known as very good sailors. The dockyard found in Lothal, Gujarat is a very solid evidence of the maritime trade being carried on during that time. The people of the Harappan civilization had established contacts with Oman, Bahrain and the countries of West Asia. Textiles have been one of the major items of Indian trade since the Harappan period. According to Hegel, "India is known in history as the land of ambitions. The result of this interaction between them (the traders) was that each other's languages got mixed to such an extent that in time, just like Hindi-Sanskrit, They started being used in colloquial speech and gradually spread to literary genres.
