The role of society in national consciousness

Abstract

The role of society in national consciousness is very important. Society affects the interest, organization and status of a nation. The stability, support and partnership of society play an important role in creating national consciousness. It establishes the identity and self-respect of the nation and encourages prosperity and equality. The emergence of national consciousness in the nineteenth century was actually the result of British rule. The changes that the British rule brought about in the political, economic and social sphere resulted in the exploitation of Indian society. It is true that the emergence and development of nationalism in India was more difficult than in other countries. Contemporary intellectuals with modern education such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Keshav Chandra Sen, Ishwar Bandra Vidyasagar, Swami Vivekananda Environt, Sir Syed Ahmed etc. tried to eradicate the evils prevalent in the society and became strong critics of British policy. And by influencing the Indian masses with their thoughts and actions, they awakened the feeling of self-confidence in them. In 1883-54, a postal system was established in India, railway lines were laid, all the cities were connected with the telegraph system, one province was connected to another and an opportunity was created to establish contact with people living in distant places. This became the main reason for the rise of Indian nationalism. During the anti-imperialist struggle, a feeling of unity emerged among the Indians. The present research paper examines these facts.
