Abstract

The word Veda is derived from the root Vid meaning knowledge by adding suffix Ghan. Therefore, the general meaning of the word Veda is the amount of knowledge or the collection of knowledge. Whatever the ancient sages obtained from their vision was stored in the Vedas. Vidyante Gyayante Labhyante Ebhirdharmaadi-Purushaartha Iti Veda: Acharya Sayana has given another explanation of the word Veda - Ishta Pratyanishta Pariharayor Laukikam Upayam Yo Grantho Vedayati Sa Vedah, Shruti, Nigam, Agama, Trayee, Chhandas, Amnaya, Swadhyaya etc. words are used in the meaning of Vedas.
