Abstract

Our ancient Indian tradition has been full of knowledge and science. Vedas are the storehouse of all knowledge, which have influenced ancient and modern philosophy. The sages who had seen mantras, saw the elements with their divine vision and gave knowledge of their use in the creation of the universe. Maharishi Bharadwaj churned the deep sea of Vedas and wrote a book named 'Yantrasvarsva', which has a detailed description of the science of flying. In the 'Vaimanikprakaran' of this book, a detailed discussion has been done on the construction of planes, flying techniques, piloting ability, speed control etc. According to Viman Shastra, there were three types of planes - Mantra (run by mantra power), Tantric (operated by tantra medicine) and Yantra (machine-dominated). Pushpak Viman described in Ramayana is an excellent example of Mantra Viman. Apart from Maharshi Bharadwaj, sages like Narayan, Shaunak, Garg also wrote books on aviation. There are indications of aircrafts in Rigveda as well, such as Tribandhuren (three seater), Trichakraen (three wheeled) etc. Modern scientists have also accepted ancient Indian aeronautics. Scholars like Charles Berlitz have accepted that the principles of modern science are already contained in Indian texts. Therefore, we should be proud of our ancient knowledge and science and try to research and spread it. This is the real identity of our Sanatan culture.
